Loss of appetite is a common condition and if severe or prolonged can have a significant negative impact on a patient's health.

Loss of appetite or anorexia can lead to mal-nutrition, weight loss, and increased susceptibility to infection. Its effects are most dangerous in patients with serious illnesses such as cancer or AIDS and if not addressed can be fatal.

Less serious forms of decreased appetite are seen in conditions such as Chron's disease, acid reflux, and hepatitis C in its early stages.

Anorexia is often a result of any condition that causes nausea and often nausea and loss of appetite are experienced together. Often patients who are very anxious or depressed report loss of appetite.

Many patients have anorexia and or nausea where no cause can be identified. This condition is called idiopathic nausea.

Cannabis has been shown to be an effective treatment for anorexia regardless of its origin. Many patients report they simply don't eat or can't eat unless using cannabis, often in very small amounts.

Anorexia nervosa is a potentially life-threatening psychiatric condition characterized by an unwillingness to eat due to a distorted body image.

Victims are most often young girls. They continue to starve themselves in an effort to be thin even when they have dieted to just skin and bones. Cannabis is NOT recommended for this condition.

Stimulating the appetite of someone trying desperately not to eat could have serious unwanted consequences.
