Cannabis has been very effective in the treatment of migraine headaches. Migraine headaches are vascular in origin and are often preceded by an aura characterized by nausea, flashes of light, dizziness or photosensitivity.

Migraines are often confused with the more common tension headache and often patients present with symptoms with characteristics of both. Migraines can sometimes be aborted by a class of medications called tyrptans.

Although effective for some patients, often they don't work or patients cannot tolerate them. If these fail to prevent the onset of the headache then painkillers are used. Migraines can cause severe and even debilitating headaches.

Successful treatment of migraine headaches has been a consistent feature of medical cannabis practices. Patients report that small amounts of cannabis, typically taken at bedtime can effectively reduce the frequency of their headaches.

Others report that cannabis has little effect on the frequency of their headaches but is very effective in relieving the pain once it starts. About half the patients report that cannabis reduces both the frequency of their headaches and the intensity of those that do occur.
