Spinal pain is by far the most common condition treated with cannabis. This includes degenerative disc disease, cervical and lumbar injuries, post spinal surgery pain as well as nerve root pain or radiculopathy associated with disc herniation or spinal stenosis. (A narrowing of the outlet through which the nerves pass on their way to the extremities). Most patients report a marked decrease in the painful muscle spasm associated with spinal disease or injury. Relief of spasm is one of the ways patients benefit from cannabis treatment.

Many patients also report that cannabis enhances their ability to process the experience of pain. They report that they know the pain is present but that it doesn't have the same debilitating physical or emotional impact. This frequently reported effect of cannabis allows patients function more effectively in spite of their condition.

Many other common painful medical conditions can be treated effectively with cannabis including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, abdominal pain from Chron's Disease, ulcerative colitis, acid reflux, and irritable bowel disease, phantom limb pain, neuropathy, migraine, PMS, and pain from orthopedic injuries.

Either alone or in conjunction with traditional prescription medications, cannabis has been shown to be a safe an effective therapeutic tool for treatment of pain resulting from a variety of clinical conditions.
